Oh My Modern Baby

Unlike the month of June which seems to be attached to the “time” for the perfect wedding, every month is a month for babies!!

So there is no ‘season’ for creating baby quilts. And there is no template for the ‘perfect’ quilt. Gone are the mandatory pastel pink or blue or the neutral green; or the primary red, blue and green. Gone are the standard images of trains, boats, teddy bears, pacifiers or boy/girl silhouettes. These are all still great choices if they speak to you. BUT, what if they don’t???

Welcome to the age of the modern baby quilt!! There are so many beautiful patterns and colors! I for one absolutely love grey and brights together. So when my grand daughter was born I had to combine my love of florals and garden theme into a modern baby quilt.

I started with a luscious grey covered in swirls of pinks, purple, turquoise and gold. Then I added the flower with a favorite jewel tone floral and solid violet. Finally four garden insects in batik, solids and florals: ladybug, butterfly, worm and bee. I love the result!

The bee is my creation while the others are taken from a block quilt pattern. The faces are absolutely sweet. The colors and faces made her tummy time fun and stimulating!

Finally, I finished the back with a polka dotted grey and a grey covered in “I Love You” script while appliquéing her name in lower case highlighted by exclamation shapes.

I still love it on her bed even though she is now a toddler!

I hope this inspires you to be bold and bright for your baby quilt!
